The ISO 14000 family of standards is well known for its environmental management and stewardship objectives. Here at Berater, we even help companies review their ISO 14001 compliance. But of course, it's important to recognize that this family of standards continues to change over time.
GHG Protocol
This protocol is internationally recognized as an international tool for measuring, reporting, and managing greenhouse gas emissions by various organizations.
As we can see, this clearly demonstrates its relationship with the ISO 14000 family, and if that weren't enough, this protocol standard is about to receive new updates and strategic partnerships.
Collaboration
This morning, as this blog was being written, the official ISO website announced the start of collaborative activities between ISO, the GHG Protocol, and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD). This is a historic partnership aimed at harmonizing their existing standards regarding greenhouse gas management.
According to reports, it has been announced that ISO and the GHG Protocol will combine their core GHG standards in favor of a new, internationalized and harmonized version under a single shared brand. Among the standards expected to be included are:
- Those that are part of the ISO 1406X family
- The corporate accounting standard
- GHG protocol report, along with its scopes 2 and 3.
With these announcements, a harmonized portfolio is expected to represent a major step toward a more common global terminology for categorizing and accounting for greenhouse gas emissions, allowing for a more streamlined process for companies to manage these other environmental management systems, and reducing the measurement and reporting burden for all users.
Obstacles
No update is easy, and this one is no exception. Potential challenges are expected in creating this effective climate action alliance, including potential fragmentation of established standards and policies. This is due to the new common approach sought for each existing portfolio that includes GHG standards as part of its shared platform.
Brief words
Several members of this alliance have spoken out on the matter. Among them is the statement by Sergio Mujica, Secretary General of ISO.
«ISO is pleased to announce this historic partnership with the GHG Protocol, which realizes an ambition that will enable co-creation and result in a harmonized portfolio of standards. Both ISO and the GHG Protocol share the vision of effectively driving climate action and simplifying work for all stakeholders. This is a new era for carbon accounting, and both organizations are delighted to collaborate»
